CARIA Annual Meeting Packed with Baseball, Networking, and Information

The Coosa-Alabama River Improvement Association held its 2016 annual membership meeting last week and, based on on-site feedback, was a success.  Starting off on Thursday evening with a short reception at the Embassy Suites (sponsored by Alabama Power Company) and then walking two blocks (in misting rain and a 15-knot wind) to take in the Montgomery Biscuits take on the Mississippi Braves, was a different outing for the  CARIA group.  The rain held off, but wind kept right on blowing, making folks glad they brought some warm clothing.  The Biscuits event was sponsored by the Alabama State Port Authority and featured a delicious BBQ buffet with all the trimmings and a dedicated bartender at the Whistle Stop Grille. Ike Lyon attend his first Biscuits game, loaded up on the BBQ, and then won a souvenir baseball, quite a night for a rookie.  All in all, it was a great evening. Even the Biscuits won, 6-3.

Most people were back at the hotel  by 9:00 PM because it was cold and there was a 7:30 AM schedule start time for Friday morning.  Friday, the continental breakfast (sponsored by Henry Marine Service, Inc.) got things going, followed by a short CARIA membership meeting at which the new CARIA Board for 2016-2017 was announced. (See separate article about the new Board of Directors.)  The General Meeting program went pretty much as planned with lots of good information put out by all the speakers.  (R&D Maintenance and Roberts Towing sponsored a rest break about half way through the morning.) Copies of each speaker’s presentation will be posted separately within the next week or so, all except BGen Turner’s speech at lunch.  The buffet lunch was sponsored by PowerSouth Cooperative.

Brigadier General Turner

My thanks to Gen Turner for being with us during the entire Friday program.  That was most appreciated.  Thanks again also to all the sponsors and speakers for helping make the 2016 annual meeting a success.  We had lots of supporters, too, in Robert F. Henry Tile Company, Mobile District of the Corps of Engineers, Montgomery Biscuits, Embassy Suites, and the Montgomery Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Next year’s meeting is currently scheduled for April 13-14 in the Montgomery area.  Details will be forthcoming.
